Every year, the gradual slowing of the earth's rotation makes every day a fraction of a second longer. In the next ten years, these fractions will add up to 0.00017 seconds. Swatch Snowboard Pro Team member and designer David Benedek transforms this theoretical discrepancy between cosmic and earth time into a visually simple design in which two coloured circles are offset and overprinted. The design of this compelling Gent extends from the white printed PVC strap and transparent clear blue loop across the solid white plastic case to the dial, where two dots in different colours highlight this ‘leap second’ (60 + 1) concept, one printed on the inside of the glass, the other on the dial. The fraction of a second appears on the 12 o’clock side of the strap—overprinted over the number of seconds in a year (31,565,926). Purple hour and minute hands and a purple seconds hand complete the design and mark the time.
