How limited are Swatch Specials?
Some Swatch models have limited production numbers and therefore are called Specials. They are easy to recognize as the reference code usually includes the “Z” as the second letter (example : GZ nnn, or LZ nnn). Art specials have been released by the Swatch company almost every year since 1985.
Other specials are usually introduced to the public for a certain occasion. For promotional events or for the Olympic Games, or for Christmas, etc etc.
Many specials that Swatch has released are numbered, so we know how many they have made from this model. This number is imprinted on the back of the watch case followed by the total number produced.
But in addition to the numbered pieces, which match the official declared production, other watches of the same model are often in existence without any numbers on the case. This leaves the answer to the question of the open production wide open to speculation.
In case of the rarest Swatch models that were produced in very low numbers (Kiki Picasso, Puff And Mimmo Paladino ), a few additional issues do not affect the collector values al all.
They are extremely desirable and demand is many times higher than the supply. The Kiki Picasso was officially produced 140 times, but at least 200 prototypes have been made. The puff had an output of 20 pieces per color, but we know there are unnumbered prototypes. Not as many though as with the Kiki. Maybe again 20 per color have been made. These models come without the special packaging. Of the Mimmo Paladino 120 watches exist, but there are a few EA(Epreuve d’Artist) pieces.
Other low production models (Original Jelly Fish and Velvet Underground) lost some of their value over the last time as collectors realized that they are offered more frequently. Also I found out that one out of two Keith Haring models only have the regular manufacturing code stamped on the case. It seems appropriate to conclude that the production of these four watches was at least twice as high as the 9999 pieces officially declared for each model.
The Rorrim5, produced exclusively for the Japanese market, has an official limitation of 5000. But we know from some Italian publications that the amount produced is at least 9,999 as some of the original packagings have a sticker saying xxxx/9999.
Is this reason to worry?
Even if the the production numbers are higher than officially declared, it still is considerably lower than the regular line output. These models have been on the market now for more than 25 years and the extra pieces that have been produced are calculated in the value showed in specialist websites like Squiggly. The market is dictated by supply and demand.
Value wise, it is more important to have the original special packaging, because those very unique items make the limited Swatches even more special.
happy collecting
